A Light on the Hill by Connilyn Cossette

Review:  I have been a fan of Connilyn Cossette since I read her "Out of Egypt" series. I completely fell in love with her writing style, vivid portrayal of Old Testament Bible stories, and the incredible knack she has for bringing the Bible to life. She is now my go-to-author for Biblical historical fiction, and I recommend her books frequently.

Her latest novel, "A Light on the Hill" is the first book of her new series, "Cities of Refuge". This book prompted me to look up 'cities of refuge' in the Bible - and what do you know.... they were a real thing. The society of ancient Jews set up these 'cities of refuge' to help ensure that people accused of a crime received a fair trial. This novel, centered on one woman's desperate flight to such a city, brings this briefly mentioned Biblical fact to life and emphasizes the importance that such cities served.

In addition to being enthralled by the history within the pages of this novel, I found the fictional story of Moriyah and her valiant guardian to be utterly swoon worthy. While Moriyah's story is tragic, this novel is filled with hope, God's steadfast faithfulness, delightful action, and a truly beautiful romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed every minute I spent reading this book and eagerly look forward to the next book in this series. I highly recommend that this book be added to your "must read" pile.

Thank-you to Graf Martin Communications and to Baker Publishing House for a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.

Back Cover:

Though Israel has found relative peace, Moriyah has yet to find her own. Attempting to avoid the scorn of her community, she's spent the last seven years hiding behind the veil she wears. Underneath her covering, her face is branded with the mark of the Canaanite gods, a shameful reminder of her past captivity in Jericho and an assurance that no man will ever want to marry her.

When her father finds a widower who needs a mother for his two sons, her hopes rise. But when their introduction goes horribly wrong, Moriyah is forced to flee for her life. Seeking safety at one of the newly established Levitical cities of refuge, she is wildly unprepared for the dangers she will face and the enemies--and unexpected allies--she will encounter on her way.x
